I watched the movie once. I never saw the play, so I really can't say how the movie compares with it. I need to watch it again, maybe even two more times, to see how the story develops, whether the songs advance the narrative, whether the movie is really good. Nonetheless, I enjoyed watching the movie. Why? Because it seems to be so very Dominican! What disappointed me about your review was that not once did I hear anyone discuss how it reflected the reality of Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, other immigrants, or really, anyone who lives in the Heights (or, for that matter, any place like the Heights). Over and over, as I listened to you talk about the movie, I just kept shaking my head and saying that you just didn't get it.
In reference to the box office, my friend and I went and saw this in the theater Sunday. My mom wanted to come with us last minute, so I went online to buy her a ticket. It was showing as sold out, so she didn’t come. But when we got to the theater, my friend and I were the only people in the entire showing. It was weird. Three other showings were also showing a sold out that night. I wonder if anyone was in those.
I'm glad that you invited Alyssa to help out with this review. It's obnoxious to hear a critic who says he doesn't get musicals. Why even bother then? Your other critic was atrocious as well. He doesn't listen to lyrics! No wonder. I couldn't handle this review. Too much ignorance about musical theatre. It's like hearing a sportscaster who doesn't enjoy sports. You do a great disservice to all of us by taking this attitude. I can't trust your reviews about any other films now. This was beyond the pale. You're in the wrong business if you don't appreciate movie musicals.
