Fandom infests the internet. You see it on online forums and websites and it goes beyond movies. It's not always called fandom but operates in similar ways. Audio and home theater forums can turn into warring camps as does anything that has enthusiasts posting. And of course politics has serious fandom issues.

Do I totally agree with A.O. Scott no, but I do acknowledge the problem.

It would have been interesting to have you guys delve into the differences between viewers with kids and those without a bit more. Anecdotally I’ve found most people to be sympathetic with Joel but to definitely consider him in the wrong. Even a small chance at saving the human race outweighs the life of a single person and going against that rationality so obviously and selfishly (as Peter said) is what makes Joel a very interesting anti-hero.

To be fair about the badness of video game adaptations a lot of them were weird tax structure cash grabs by Uwe Boll and didn't need to be good.

So, I understand the point on "The Last of Us" lacking in terms of some core conflict of ideas or concepts, BUT I have to disagree hard in terms of how good the show is because I think it misses the point of the story, in my opinion: Only we can save ourselves. Not something or someone else, but only ourselves through our own actions and choices. And sometimes, those choices are terrible, brutal decisions, but they are still what is required of us
